A Moment of Sunshine

Weather was not cooperating with me. There was a storm all over the country hence a cloudy atmosphere in Palawan was expected. There was only few minutes of sunburst that I was able to capture. The lighting was very tricky and I wasn't able to capture things properly. I wonder if a CPL would help in this case...

I've stopped using most of my Photoshop plug-ins. It's either Lightroom is already doing a good job or I'm just getting lazy. I feel it is the latter. I need something to break through this hurdle I am in. I need to find that "something" in my photos so I can continue to grow as a photographer. Do I need better equipment? Technique? Places to visit? Not really sure... I need to figure that out for now.

The Swing

I have a new tutorial about textures to make photos more interesting. Kindly check it out
Textures Tutorial

Many beaches of Coron boasts their white powdery sands which is said to be better than Boracay. People who love the night life of drinking and partying will probably not be interested in this place. Coron beaches are all about being one with the nature. No silly fire dancing or drunkards, just a beautiful beach with a beautiful view. My kind of place.

Making Your Photos Unique with Textures

Have you ever ended up with a dull and boring photo even after you have performed your Lightroom and/or Photoshop edits? Textures might be the answer. I don't usually go through post processing thinking that this image will look good with textures. Instead, when post processing wasn't able to bring out the best of the picture, I use textures as a last resort to make things a little bit more interesting. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. So just keep an open mind in when using textures and take this idea with a grain of salt.

Here is an example of an image after I have applied texture. I find it a little bit more interesting with the strong vignette and classic feel for the the pagoda. I added a texture to this photo because there were too many white spaces in the image and this way, it draws more attention to the pagoda.

1. Open your post processed photo.

To get the best results, you would want to have finished applying most of the major post processing techniques before you apply the texture.

2. Open the texture you fancy

Find a texture you think it will blend perfectly with your current image. SkeletalMess of Flickr provides good textures for free just in case you don't know where to find one.

3. Copy the texture on top of your main image.

There are many ways to stack the texture to your main image. Select All + Copy + Paste usually does the job. But I find this way a little better because I don't get the "Not enough RAM to copy to clipboard" whenever I exit Photoshop (My laptop is freakishly slow).

Click on Window -> Arrange -> Tile

This tiles the images in your Photoshop window. This is more useful you have want to stack a lot of images into one picture.

4. Click on the texture window and drag the layer to the main image. If you have a lot of photos you want to stack, this technique is easier because all you have to do is drag and drop all the layers you want to transfer.

5. Resize the texture to cover your main image using Free-Transform.

Press Ctrl + t on your keyboard and drag the corners of the image to cover the layer below.

Note: I have seen other tutorials that resize the image based on the pixel count of the main image. I haven't tried it yet to determine if there is a big difference. I'll probably update this photo if I find the differences significant.

6. Ensure that the entire image below the texture is covered completely.

6. Select the blending mode.

Here is where the magic happens. Just select any of the 3 blending modes below that suits your taste. I usually just use 3: Overlay, Soft Light and Hard Light. I think these three are enough to properly blend in the texture to the main image.

Overlay - Middle

Soft Light - Light

Hard Light - Strong

If you've finished selecting your blending mode and still find the effect of the texture too strong, you can always lower the opacity to your liking or use a mask to bring parts of the original photo back.

Here are the some other photos of mine where I used the same technique. Enjoy =)

The Lonely Hut

Visited Coron, Palawan while I was on my 2 week vacation in the Philippines. There is so much hype about this place that I had no choice but to check it out. I've been to Puerto Princesa in Palawan and I have to say the beauty of Coron can easily match those of Puerto Princesa. Indeed this is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Almost any direction you take entails an awesome scenery of sea and mountains. Even with a bad weather (as seen in the picture), rarely it will spoil your trip to this beautiful paradise.

This shot was taken from Mt. Tapyas which roughly requires 786 steps to get to the peak. Though it is not the tallest mountain in the area, it still provides a magnificent 360 degree view of the town below. Initially, I was waiting for the sun to come down. But because of the cloudy weather (it was actually raining hard in different parts of the country) I decided to go down and visit the other sites of the town rather than to get disappointed.
